In addition to buying local and in-season vegetables & fruits, I am trying to buy organic products as much as possible. Buying organic groceries, however, can be DIFFICULT & EXPENSIVE. So I sometimes cheat & just ignore my worries over the risks of pestcide intakes and buy the conventionally grown produce just because they are cheaper & more convenient.
While recently reading The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth: The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why, I found out that the degree of contamination greatly varies depending on the type of vegetables and fruits.
Now I try to avoid the so-called "12 dirtiest vegetables & fruits." On the other hand, I feel safe buying "Clean 15" vegetables and fruits, even if not organic.
*** Here is a list of "Dirty Dozen" & "Clean 15."***

4. Celery
5. Nectarine
6. Strawberries

Thanks for the info I really need to buy more organic.
This is a great list. I need to print this out!
Oh my goodness! I had never heard the dirty vs. clean veggies! And I was even more suprised to see that I eat almost everything on the dirty list, and very little on the clean list...lol. Well I greatly appreciate that list, at least now I've got something to shoot for (cleaner veggies).
Thanks also for visiting my blog and commenting! ;-)
I've always avoided non-organic broccoli, because it's hard to properly clean, and the thought of all those toxins worry me. But it looks like it is actually be not so bad! And... oops, I have been buying non-organic carrots every now and then. Who'da thunk it?
What great information. We were on the same page today (;
thanks for visiting my blog! You asked about how I do price breakouts, and I'm about to blog about just that thing! Should be up tomorrow!
From all I've come to understand about Hawaii, it sounds like you are doing something quite wonderful with your thrift. I know it's really pricey!
Take Care!
