The 2nd Annual Grow Hawaiian Festival will take place on the Great Lawn at Bishop Museum on Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The event celebrates conservation, sustainability, culture, and endemic and Polynesian-introduced plants. Learn how to weave, make Kapa (a fabric similar to Tapa - see picture above). Enjoy Hawaiian music and traditional Hula performances.
Admission is FREE for Kama'aina (Hawaii Residents) & Military

Iolani School Fair: April 17 & 18
The Ioalni Fair takes place on this coming Friday & Saturday (April 17 & 18) from Noon to 10:30 PM.
There will be

Night Market @ Aloha Tower: April 15
Tomorrow night (April 15) from 5:00 to 10:00PM is the Night Market @ Aloha Tower Marketplace.
The Night Market is the monthly event (the 3rd Wednesday) that features Hawaii's sustainable lifestyle.
Tomorrow's event focuses on the Earth and features a local non-profit organization, Kanu Hawaii. Enjoy local foods, a fashion show, art exhibitions, & swap shop (bring your old cloths to swap (or donate). There also will be special performance by “Kings of Spade” & DJ Monkey.
The admission to the event is FREE. A validated parking is also available.

Second Saturday @ Hawaii State Art Museum

This coming Saturday is the Second Saturday @ Hawaii State Art Museum.
This month's event is “Art Mania” and “Slam Poetry.”
The fun activities include writing & performing poems & playing poetry games. There also will be printmaking, sculpture, and painting. Compose beautiful images, manipulate wire into exciting figures, and explore techniques for creating texture in watercolor.
Art galleries are open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with activities scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

This coming Sunday (April 12) is Bank of Hawaii Sunday @ Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Bank of Hawaii Family Sundays feature entertainment and activities suitable for families and people of all ages. This event is normally held on every third Sunday (This month's event is held a week early due to scheduling conflicts).
The activities include exploration of the Academy’s galleries through scavenger hunts, art activities, demonstrations and film screenings. This month’s theme is “Unity.” See schedule & location.

I love, love, love, love this museum. The collection is diverse (though a little heavy on Asian arts). The special exhibitions are often very interesting - the recent exhibition of Mughal paintings was just fantastic!! The buildings and gardens alone are simply exquisite.
On a uncrowded day (not Bank of Hawaii Sunday), I enjoy sitting on a bench in the Early European Modernism room & observe its collection for a while (right before I freeze to death) - my perfect day.
The cafe & gift shop are also fabulous.

Easter Bunny Eggs - Travaganza @ Hale'iwa Farmers' Market

Mauka to Makai Environmental Expo @ Waikiki Aquarium

On this coming Saturday (April 11) from 9:00AM to 4PM, the Waikiki Aquarium is hosting the 2nd Mauka ("mountain") to Makai ("ocean") Environmental Expo.
The activities at the event include picture taking with Apoha the oopu, water pollution prevention games, arts and crafts, and much more. You will be also get to witness releasing of of the moi (Pacific threadfin) into the water.
Admission to Earth Day festivities is FREE.

Buy Local & In-Season
I try to buy local & in-season vegetables and fruits as much as possible. They sometimes cost more than out-of-state produce, but they just taste better (& last longer in my fridge).
Other benefits of buying local are NUMEROUS. To list a few;
* Less environment impacts - transportation, packaging, etc.
* Less preservatives.
* Support local economy.
* Promote self-sufficiency - this is especially important for isolated islands like Hawaii.

Where can we find local vegetables & fruits?;
* Supermarkets - look for labels such as "Island Fresh," "Buy Local," etc. The best supermarket to find local (& organic) produces is Whole Foods.
* China Town - the price there is normally the best, but a little hard to find out where each produce is from. Look for hints on cardboard boxes the produces are in... You can also ask sales people...
* Framer's Markets - Refer to a list of Farmer's Market in Oahu, Big Island, Kauai, Maui. My favorite is KCC Farmer's Market - a wonderful selection of vegetables, fruits, meat, honey, snacks, flowers and more. Another farmer's market is opening in Haleiwa on 4/5. Also, Mayor Hannemann also proposes opening "a premier farmers market" at the Blaisdell Center parking lot - I totally support his proposal!!

Hawaii Ocean Expo: March 28 & 29 (Coupon Alert)

VJ Entertainment & KHON2 are hosting the first Hawaii Ocean Expo on March 28 & 29.
This event sounds like a lot of fun. It will feature vendors and sponsors representing boating, fishing, canoe paddling, surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, SCUBA diving, sailboarding, skin diving, ocean apparel companies, and much more. There also will be the largest surf sample sale ever in Hawaii.
I am especially excited about cooking demonstrations by chefs @ Nobu - I was so excited when Nobu came to Waikiki. But now I am getting so used to frugal living, I don't know if I can tolerate their prices. But... cooking demonstrations usually mean free samples!! So maybe I can taste some of Nobu's dishes for FREE??? Oh, I cannot wait to find out!!!!!

Tour de Trash of Honolulu: March 19

Ever wondered what happens to your garbages after you dump them at a collection site? Well, find out by going on the Tour de Trash hosted by the Honolulu Department of Environment Services
This bus tour consists of a series of 6 FREE educational trips to various trash sites in Oahu.
The next trip scheduled on this coming Thursday, March 19, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. will take you to Honolulu's Wastewater Treatment. It might be too late to sign up for this week's tour, because according to the official site - "Buses are usually fully booked within a couple weeks with long wait lists for each tour." But hopefully there are still seats available for the remaining 4 trips scheduled this year.
I have never been on this tour, but have been to trash sites several times as a part of school trip... As much as I was impressed by the new technology used to handle ever-increasing amounts of garbages, they were truly eye-opening experiences for me - I became more careful with what, where, & how I throw things away.
Frankly, I am not so impressed with how Honolulu handles garbage, especially when Scotland as a nation, Sydney city and this small town in Japan strive for "Zero Waste." Or how San Francisco City is trying to reduce waste by mandating 75 percent of its garbage to be recycled or composted by 2010 - I will not go into the debate over whether composting is not so eco-friendly for emitting greenhouse gas...
I realize that suddenly requiring us, Honolulu residents, to compost all our food waste and sort other rubbish into 34 different categories is not so feasible (not to mention political suicide for Mufi & city council members).
The city, however, could make a green step forward by immediately mandating comprehensive curbside recycling citywide (not just some pilot areas) with additional bins for hazardous wastes (such as used batteries, electronics, etc.)
Currently I go to nearby schools or shopping center (like Dillingham Plaza when I shop at Savers) to recycle my paper stuff. I, however, have no idea what to do with hazardous wastes - I try to use rechargeable batteries, but I still need regular batteries for emergency electronics (since we have so many prolonged blackouts lately...). I have accumulated a considerable amount of batteries with which I have no idea what to do....
Off course, I cannot entirely blame the city for mismanaging our garbage, I know that I have to take a full responsibility over my own trash. Since Steph (I tried to link to her profile, but could not... I have no idea how to use this commentluv thing I again impulsively installed. I am sorry, Steph.) left me comments about composting, I have been doing some research on this matter, & found WORMLADY in Hawaii!!
I am not so thrilled about having worms inside my house (Our landlord strictly forbids us to leave anything outside our unit), I cannot deny my fascination with this WORMLADY....

Honolulu Festival; March 13-15

Honolulu Festival is a big annual event that celebrates the rich cultural diversity of the Pacific and Asia. It showcases live musical and cultural performances, as well as art exhibits from groups in Asia and the Pacific.
The festival runs for three days from March 13 to March 15.
Various entertainments and exhibitions will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Shopping Center, Waikiki Shopping Plaza and Waikiki Beach Walk. A Grand Parade along Kalakaua Avenue on the final evening is quite spectacular.
All events are FREE (Except for "Friendship Gala" @ Hawaii Convention Center).

Second Saturday @ Hawaii State Art Museum
This coming Saturday is the Second Saturday @ Hawaii State Art Museum.
This month's event is “Art At Play: Musical Picture, Magical Sculpture, Singing AND Telling Tales In the Galleries.”
There will be also tours of the tours of architectural treasures in the Hawaii Capital District by a preservationist, Jeff Tripp.
Art galleries are open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with musical activities scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
All events are FREE.

Pualeilani Festival of Arts: March 14
This coming Saturday (March 14, 2009), head over to the Royal Hawaiian Center at Waikiki to enjoy entertainments by hula dances, singers, and choral groups.
The event runs from Noon to 6pm.
This Pualeilani Festival of Arts is a part of a month-long Prince Kuhio Celebration.
You can also participate in demonstrations of Native Hawaiian arts and crafts.

First Friday Honolulu Gallery Walk
First Friday Honolulu Gallery Walk is FREE self-guided tour of galleries, surrounding shops & restaurants and the Hawaii State Art Museum in downtown Honolulu.

List of exhibitionsGalleries and other arts venues host monthly opening receptions (= free pupus (appetizers/snacks), perhaps??) to showcase their new exhibits. The surrounding shops and restaurants are also open until 9:00pm or later.
My husband and I joined this event two months ago and had a lot of fun. I normally do not prefer contemporary arts, but to my surprise, many of the exhibits were very inspirational and thought-provoking. I have to warn you, however, some of the exhibits at the galleries may be considered unsuitable for children. Also we felt a bit awkward because we were one of a few very under-dressed people.
If you are thinking of taking your children to this fun event, I highly recommend an event at the State Hawaii Art Museum. The museum hosts "Live from the Lawn," a FREE live entertainment that features local and around-the-world musicians and dancers. This month's theme is "Music and dance from Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Java, Cambodia, Malaysia, and the Philippines." The event runs from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
If weather holds tomorrow (I am so spoiled living in Hawaii, I simply do not go out when it rains :)), we are thinking of joining again. This time, we'll try to dress up.

Mardi Gras Carnival - 2/24 (Fat Tuesday)
Celebrate Mardi Gras at an open air festival on Nu'uanu Avenue this coming Tuesday. It is FREE!
The event runs from 6pm to 10pm.
